United Gateway Card commits $1.2M for pilot scholarships at Aviate Academy

WILMINGTON, D.E. – June 25, 2024 – The United GatewaySM Card from Chase has announced a commitment of $1.2 million to the scholarship program for United Aviate Academy, United Airlines’ flight school in Goodyear, Arizona. This initiative aims to create additional pathways to the flight deck for aspiring aviators and address the ongoing demand for more pilots. The United Gateway Credit Card contributes a portion of every United purchase to fund these scholarships.

United Aviate Academy, established in 2022, offers a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in aviation. Students undergo comprehensive training that includes computer-based instruction, ground training, and aircraft flight training. They must also obtain six FAA-required ratings and certifications before graduating and pursuing their Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certification.

“At United Aviate Academy, we help our students achieve their professional pilot dreams by providing the best aviation education, impactful mentorship, all while upholding world-class safety and training standards,” said Michael Hales, CEO of United Aviate Academy. “We are proud to work closely with Chase to champion the next generation of aviation excellence.”

Since 2021, JPMorgan Chase has provided $3.6 million in scholarship funds to support future pilots. United Airlines has matched each Chase scholarship commitment, bringing the total investment to $7.2 million since 2021.

United collaborates with various industry organizations to educate aspiring aviators about pathways to becoming pilots. These organizations select and award scholarship recipients with grants funded by United and Chase. Partner organizations include:

- Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP)

- Sisters of the Skies (SoS)

- The Latino Pilots Association (LPA)

- The Professional Asian Pilots Association (PAPA)

- National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA)

- Women in Aviation International (WAI)

The latest recipient of the United Gateway Card from Chase scholarship is Je’Sika B., a member of WAI who was surprised with the news at United Aviate Academy.

“The United Cards from Chase create opportunities for people to explore the world and these scholarships are one way we can create a new avenue for motivated, qualified and passionate students to do just that through a career as a professional pilot,” said Laurinda Rainey, Managing Director and General Manager at United Airlines Co-brand at Chase.
