Bank of America Marathon brings record $547M boost to Chicago economy

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has made a substantial impact on the local economy, contributing a record $547 million in 2023. This represents a 42% increase from the previous year's $386 million, according to an independent study by Jones & Associates Economics.

Since 2017, the marathon has generated over $2.3 billion in cumulative economic impact. The tourism sector, including hospitality, food service, accommodations, retail, and transportation across all 50 Chicago wards, experienced the most significant effect with $177 million tied directly to the event.

The marathon is regarded as one of Chicago's key annual events. In 2023, it attracted 48,472 participants—a nearly 13% increase from 2022—with international visitors making up 35% of the runners.

"At over half a billion dollars of impact, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon proved to be one of the greatest drivers of economic activity in Chicagoland in 2023," said Rich Gamble, Interim President and CEO of Choose Chicago. "Marathon weekend is one of the most important dates on the calendar in Chicago."

In addition to its financial contributions, the marathon created 3,694 full-time jobs and generated $182.98 million in wages and salaries.

"Every year, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon’s impact and visibility grows," said Carey Pinkowski, Executive Race Director. "Whether it’s economic or charitable impact or the prestige of the event itself."

"The Bank of America Chicago Marathon places Chicago on the world stage," added Rita Cook, President at Bank of America Chicago. "Beyond the enormous economic lift it provides small businesses and individuals across the city."

The next race will take place on Sunday, October 13 at Grant Park.
