Barclays US Consumer Bank has unveiled a new suite of co-branded credit cards for AARP members, aimed at providing rewards in categories significant to this demographic. The new offerings include the AARP® Essential Rewards Mastercard® and the AARP® Travel Rewards Mastercard®, both designed to cater to the spending habits related to health, wellness, travel, and other areas.
AARP, with nearly 38 million members, aims to empower people as they age. These new card products from Barclays offer additional options for members to earn rewards on every purchase. Insights from research conducted by Barclays informed the development of these cards, which come with tailored benefits targeting different segments within AARP's membership.
The AARP Essential Rewards Mastercard offers 3% cash back on gas and drug store purchases and 2% cash back on medical expenses. The AARP Travel Rewards Mastercard provides 3% cash back on airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, and 2% on restaurant purchases. Both cards feature no annual fee, a $100 introductory bonus after a $500 spend within the first 90 days, and more.
"AARP members told us they were looking for more in a credit card," stated John Larew, President and CEO of AARP Services (ASI). He noted that wellness benefits were a priority among members.
Barclays also announced its support for the AARP Foundation through Essential Connections Powered by Barclays. This initiative will donate $10 per new account opened and contribute 1% of eligible electronic purchases to aid social connections among older adults.
Lisa Marsh Ryerson, President of AARP Foundation commented: "Barclays' support...will improve their physical and emotional health...long after it ends."
Nichelle Evans from Barclays highlighted their commitment: "With these new credit cards...we are offering products designed to help Americans live life to its fullest..."
Current holders of the existing AARP Credit Card from Chase can continue using their cards until further communication about conversion is received later this year.
