Capital One has achieved a Guinness World Record for the highest number of participants in an online financial literacy lesson within 24 hours. Over 1,800 people engaged with Khan Academy's curriculum to learn about budgeting, saving, buying a car, and paying for college.
The event saw participation nationwide through organized gatherings at Capital One’s campuses and Café locations, as well as remote engagements. Capital One associates also joined the challenge, including three Student Ambassadors from the Anacostia Café program, which offers internships to high school students in Washington, D.C.
“Financial literacy can help build the foundation for financial security, both for individuals and families — which can lead to more vibrant communities,” stated Sanjiv Yajnik, President of Financial Services at Capital One. “I am thrilled that we set a new world record, and am grateful to our associates, their families and friends, our community partners, and our customers who completed the challenge. Most importantly, I’m excited that we were able to spread the word about the importance of financial literacy and bring awareness to Khan Academy’s free lessons through this initiative.”
In Dallas-Fort Worth, Capital One collaborated with NAF and local Independent School Districts to host 450 high school students at its Plano campus. The Frisco Café hosted an additional 100 students. According to Khan Academy data, education programs have led participants to increase their savings rates by 22%.
Senator Angela Paxton (R-TX) and Representative Mihaela Plesa (D-TX) attended the Plano event. Paxton remarked on her legislative efforts: “One of the things that I had an opportunity to do in the Texas Senate about four years ago was sponsor bi-partisan legislation to allow schools to offer an expansion in the way that students can meet their economics graduation requirement... I am happy to see it in action here.” Plesa emphasized advocacy: “We need more events like this... We need to advocate for financial literacy in our schools.”
Dallas Mavericks Forward P.J. Washington also participated by sharing his personal story on goal setting with students: “Growing up, I would outline my goals... Financial goals are very important for me.”
This achievement is part of Capital One’s ongoing efforts through its Impact Initiative aimed at enhancing socioeconomic mobility and closing opportunity gaps. Since partnering with Khan Academy in 2023 for developing a free financial literacy course used during this record-setting event, over 940,000 people have completed it.
