Washington, D.C. – A virtual career development event was hosted by Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-S.C.) for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in South Carolina and nationwide. The event aimed to discuss financial literacy and career opportunities within the financial services sector.
The event featured federal regulators and leaders from both local and international financial firms who engaged with students on these critical topics. "Thank you to each HBCU for attending and the students that are with us today. Thank God you’re here – it’s really all about you anyway," said Ranking Member Scott during his remarks. He emphasized the importance of increasing African American participation in the financial industry, sharing his personal experiences growing up in poverty. "One of the most important rungs of the ladder is in fact, financial literacy, and being a participant in the financial industry."
As a leading Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, Scott has focused on promoting financial literacy through various legislative efforts. His ROAD to Housing Act aims to improve access to housing counseling and financial education for families buying or maintaining homes. Additionally, his Empowering Main Street in America Act seeks to enhance market understanding through improved educational programs.
Scott's commitment extends beyond legislation; he led a resolution declaring April 2024 as Financial Literacy Month, underscoring his dedication to this cause.
