Navy Federal Credit Union honored with Secretary of Defense Freedom Award

Navy Federal Credit Union has been named one of 15 recipients of the 2024 Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Freedom Award. This award is the highest honor given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserves.

The credit union was chosen from 1,758 nominations submitted by Guard and Reserve service members or their families. Navy Federal was acknowledged for its strong support of military-serving employees, offering flexible scheduling, continued benefits and pay during deployments, and a supportive work environment that addresses the unique challenges faced by those in the Guard and Reserves.

“Guard and reserve members play a critical role in our nation’s defense and military readiness,” stated Navy Federal CEO Dietrich Kuhlmann. “Ensuring our team members who have made the decision to serve their country in this way are supported is something we pride ourselves on at Navy Federal, and we’re honored to receive this prestigious award from the Department of Defense in recognition of that commitment.”

The ESGR 2024 Freedom Award was presented to Navy Federal Credit Union during an annual ceremony at the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. Kuhlmann represented the credit union as it joined other employers recognized for exemplary support of military service members.

Navy Federal is consistently recognized for fostering a balanced, productive, and inclusive work environment. Earlier this year, it was named a Top Veteran Friendly Employer for 2024 by U.S. Veteran’s Magazine. It also celebrated its 13th consecutive year on FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For® List while being included in PEOPLE’s Magazine's 2024 Companies That Care list.

Established in 1933 with seven members, Navy Federal now serves over 13 million members globally as the world’s largest credit union. Membership is open to all Department of Defense and Coast Guard Active Duty personnel, Veterans, civilian contractors, and their families. The organization employs over 24,000 people across more than 360 branches worldwide.
