United States Senator Elizabeth Warren has issued a statement criticizing President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Senator Warren, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, expressed her concerns regarding the potential implications of these tariffs.
"Tariffs are an important strategic economic tool," stated Warren. However, she criticized Trump's approach by saying that his "desire for a trade war with Canada and Mexico won’t protect jobs, keep Americans safe, or bring down costs for families." She emphasized that tariffs should be employed to "promote American manufacturing, build strong supply chains, and create good-paying jobs."
Senator Warren also highlighted what she perceives as an imbalance in the President's actions. She remarked that while China is accused of "stealing our technology and actively undermining American industry," Trump is imposing stricter measures on products like maple syrup and avocados from neighboring countries.
Expressing further concern, Warren noted that Trump's tariff strategy might provide opportunities for large corporations to exploit the situation. She said she fears they may use these tariffs "as an excuse to raise prices on working families while doling out waivers to billionaires and well-connected insiders."
In her statement, Warren assured that Congress would maintain rigorous oversight over the President's actions concerning these tariffs. She concluded by affirming that both Congress and "the American people – will hold him accountable."
