United States Senator Elizabeth Warren has expressed concerns regarding the Department of Treasury's response to her inquiries about Secretary Bessent's reported actions. These reports suggest that Elon Musk and DOGE were granted access to government payment systems.
Senator Warren, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee and is also a member of the Senate Finance Committee, issued a statement addressing these issues. She stated: “The response from Treasury raises more questions than answers. It asserts that a set of Treasury staff members have ‘read-only’ access but fails to answer questions about non-Treasury employees, like those working for Elon Musk and DOGE."
Warren highlighted inconsistencies between Treasury’s assertions and public reports. She emphasized the need for Secretary Bessent to clarify how such access was authorized, identify who had or currently has access to critical systems, and detail protections in place for economic security, national security, and citizens' private data.
The matter remains under scrutiny as further explanations are sought from the Department of Treasury.
