United States Senator Elizabeth Warren expressed her concerns regarding the tariffs imposed by President Trump and China's retaliatory actions. As a ranking member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, as well as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Warren shared her perspective on the ongoing trade tensions.
In her statement, Senator Warren said, “Tariffs are a tool to help strategically grow American industry. I’m concerned that President Trump is stumbling into a trade war that isn’t designed to protect American jobs or industry while giving corporations cover to raise prices on working families.”
Senator Warren also highlighted issues beyond tariffs. She stated, “On top of that, the President is holding up critical bipartisan investments to shore up our energy security and is attempting to gut the Inflation Reduction Act tax credits that would eliminate China’s leverage over our critical mineral supply chains.” According to her, Beijing is aware of these weaknesses and is taking advantage of them.
Furthermore, she pointed out that President Trump has not strengthened export controls with China despite having bipartisan proposals available. “President Trump is focused on bluster and photo ops while China is focused on winning,” she added.
The Senator emphasized Congress's role in overseeing how tariffs are utilized by the administration. She concluded by asserting that both Congress and the American people will hold the President accountable for his actions in this area.
