Senator Elizabeth Warren has responded to a preliminary injunction that blocks an attempt by co-Presidents Trump and Musk to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Warren, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, expressed reaffirmation of the court's decision through a video statement.
In her statement, she affirmed the importance of the CFPB and criticized actions she believes subvert its mission. "Today a court blocked co-Presidents Trump and Musk from shutting down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - yay! - and found that those DOGE operatives likely broke the law," Warren stated.
She emphasized the agency's role, which was established by Congress, to protect consumers from scams, suggesting its purpose remains crucial despite opposition. "Because here’s the thing: Congress created the CFPB to work on behalf of people who get scammed—and that mandate doesn’t go away just because Trump and Musk want it to," she added.
Warren cautioned that the legal battle is ongoing and encouraged continued support for the CFPB, highlighting its track record in financial consumer protection. "But make no mistake: this fight isn’t over. The case will continue in court, and all of us need to keep fighting for the little agency that has returned more than $21 billion back to families who were cheated, tricked, and scammed by big banks and other financial companies," she said.
Her closing remarks urged support for the agency, reinforcing its perceived value: "So, stay in the fight. It’s worth it."
