U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has addressed a letter to Donald Trump's nominee for Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, John Hurley. The letter was sent in advance of his upcoming confirmation hearing. In it, Warren questions Hurley's plans for enforcing sanctions and combatting money laundering and terrorist financing.
Warren, the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, pointed out that Hurley lacks prior experience in dealing directly with sanctions or illicit finance issues. The letter emphasized the growing responsibility of the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence (TFI) in managing sanctions and addressing emerging threats like cryptocurrency-related illicit finance.
In Warren's words, “(Y)our answers to the questions below and your testimony before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs will be critical to assessing how you plan to lead the national security arm of the Treasury Department.”
The confirmation hearing for Hurley is scheduled for April 10. Warren and her fellow Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee will use this opportunity to scrutinize Hurley's preparedness to lead the TFI, an agency crucial to national security and financial integrity.
