U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Maxine Waters have called for an investigation into the Board of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) following the alleged illegal firings of two of its members by President Trump. The announcement was made jointly by the lawmakers, who both hold ranking positions in their respective congressional committees.
“These firings are part of the President’s concerning attempts to skirt the rule of law, undermine independent agencies, and illegally purge the government of those who work for the American people," Warren and Waters remarked in their letter. They expressed concern that "the President’s actions threaten to paralyze the Board, create unnecessary legal risk for the agency, and harm the stability of our nation’s credit union system.”
The letter addressed to the NCUA Inspector General seeks clarification on the Board’s ability to function with only one remaining member. Warren and Waters have requested an investigation into “the NCUA’s Chairman’s authority to continue full agency operations with only one Board member.”
The two dismissed board members, Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka, have responded with legal action against the Administration over their firings.
