AFSA has announced the passing of Alvin O. Wiese, a prominent figure in the field of consumer finance law, who died on October 11 at the age of 95. Al Wiese, a graduate of the University of Southern California Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1954 and spent his career representing consumer finance lenders, AFSA, and the California Association.
Wiese played a significant role in legislative processes as an insightful witness before congressional hearings, particularly concerning bankruptcy reform. He contributed to drafting several federal and state amendments for AFSA and often served as the final editor for AFSA’s testimonies.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the AFSA Distinguished Service Award for his work on various issues including the FTC Credit Practices Rule, TILA, and bankruptcy reform.
Al Wiese resided in Indian Wells, California. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his passion for golf, skiing both on snow and water, love for dogs, and travel. His preference for ordering cocktails in "a bucket" rather than highball glasses was well-known among AFSA Law Committee members.
He is survived by his wife Patti and their daughter Cathy.
