Concerns raised over New Jersey debt adjuster licensing bill

AFSA's State Government Affairs team has expressed concerns regarding a proposed bill in New Jersey, S1310, which would allow certain for-profit debt adjusters to be licensed to operate within the state. According to AFSA, these adjusters impose high fees without providing additional benefits that borrowers cannot already access by negotiating directly with their creditors. The organization points to evidence suggesting that some "debt settlement" companies engage in unethical practices, such as charging fees without contacting lenders.

AFSA is worried about the potential impact of this bill on its members and their customers in New Jersey. They argue that licensing these "debt adjusters" could exacerbate the financial difficulties faced by struggling borrowers. AFSA had previously submitted both a comment letter and testimony regarding this legislation.

The testimony and other recent advocacy efforts by AFSA's State Government Affairs team are available on the direct advocacy section of AFSA's website.
