Key dates as new Congress begins: speaker election, electoral vote certification

The 119th Congress is set to commence with a series of significant events and actions throughout January. The American Financial Services Association (AFSA) plans to engage with members of Congress at the outset to advocate for fair access to capital within the financial services industry.

On January 3, both the Senate and the House will officially begin their sessions. The Senate will pass an "organizing resolution," granting Republicans control over Senate committees. Concurrently, the House will vote for the Speaker of the House. Current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) holds a narrow majority and requires nearly unanimous support from his party to retain his position. If elected, the House will proceed with voting on its rules package.

The certification of Electoral College votes is scheduled for January 6. However, this process may be postponed if no Speaker has been elected by that date.

From January 7-9, President Jimmy Carter will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda before his state funeral. Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. Lying in state is reserved for individuals who have provided distinguished service to the nation, subject to family wishes and congressional approval.

Senate committees are expected to announce confirmation hearing times for President-elect Trump's nominees between January 10-17, following a week's notice requirement after passing of the organizing resolution.
