AFSA’s State Government Affairs team has released a new white paper analyzing recent changes in consumer protection enforcement. The report looks at the impact of leadership changes at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), particularly following the departure of former Director Rohit Chopra.
According to AFSA, the CFPB has adopted a less aggressive approach to consumer protection enforcement under the Trump administration. This reduction in federal oversight has prompted several states to take a more active role in consumer protection, often with encouragement or guidance from Chopra.
The white paper notes that a number of state bills remain active as 2026 approaches, suggesting that additional legislatures may soon consider stronger enforcement measures. The document is available along with other SGA white papers on the SGA resources section of AFSA’s website.
"Several state bills remain active heading into 2026, signaling that more legislatures may soon pursue tougher enforcement measures," according to the white paper.
